Sydney Peace Foundation
Archie was appointed as the Chair of The Sydney Peace Foundation, which is a Foundation of the University of Sydney, in May 2017. He stepped down after a highly successful six-year tenure at the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation in May 2023.
OBJECTIVE
Archie was appointed as Chair with a mandate to renew the Sydney Peace Foundation Council, develop strategy and grow the organisations impact and reputation.
OUTCOMES
- During Archie’s tenure he worked with the Foundation’s Council and Staff to award the Sydney Peace Prize to Patrice Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opel Tometi, who founded the Black Lives Matter Movement, Nobel Laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Tracey Spicer AM and Tarana Burke, who founded the Me Too Movement, and to the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
- Archie was instrumental in awarding the Sydney Peace Prize to the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2022. The prize was accepted by Professor Megan Davis AC, Pat Anderson AO and Noel Pearson who were the primary architects of the Uluru Statement which has been the centrepiece of efforts to recognise First Nations Peoples in the Australian Constitution. The prize was presented in front of 2500 people at Sydney Town Hall and the Laureates were honoured at a Gala Dinner attended by 700 people.
- The Foundation's prestigious Human Rights Medal was awarded twice during Archie's term. Archie initiated the proposal to award a medal to Midnight Oil for their work on social justice and Indigenous rights.
- Whilst Archie was Chair, he led a number of initiatives including the development of a new business model focusing on partnerships with the private sector and civil society, the development of a new strategy focused on voice, impact and sustainability and the transition of the Council to a diverse, inclusive and highly effective leadership team.
